Standing in 14 acres of grounds overlooking the Lakeland fells and the ruins of Kendal Castle, this modern family-run hotel actually occupies the shell of an old Victorian building. There are delightful views from the floor-to-ceiling windows of the sleek Greenhouse Restaurant, where ambitious contemporary cuisine is the order of the day.
The full carte might open with roast scallops and Parma ham with cauliflower purée before roast Grizedale partridge with creamed caraway cabbage or loin of tuna with coriander and pickled vegetables. Bringing up the rear are desserts like lemon tart brûlée with raspberry sorbet or apple crumble with apple fritters and caramel ice cream. Simpler food and real ales are also available in Alexanders – the hotel's bespoke pub.
