Review on Ristorante Rinuccini
This restaurant really is an Italian family business, with Antonio Cavaliere and his wife running the show alongside their son and daughter-in-law. The location is a gentrified terrace opposite Kilkenny castle, and the below-stairs dining room buzzes as the crowds of devoted locals and visitors start to fill the close-packed tables.
Antonio hails from Lazio and the food here is infused with the flavours of his homeland. He buys much of his seafood direct from the boats on Kilmore Quay, gets his meat from a butcher in Cork and imports many provisions direct from Italy. Warm asparagus with creamy Gorgonzola sauce makes a good first course, ahead of excellent pasta (spaghettini with crab and chilli, for example); other specialities might range from fillet of Kilkenny beef with mustard sauce and brandy to salmon with a dressing of olive oil, white wine and tomatoes.
The glorious all-Italian wine list must rank as one of the finest and most extensive of its kind in Ireland. The choice of growers is second-to-none and all wines are sourced direct; the line-up of Super Tuscans should prove irresistible to those with plenty of disposable income.
