Review on Zuni Restaurant & Townhouse
One of a new breed of destination venues that are breathing life into the Irish hotel and restaurant scene, Zuni is a bespoke 'restaurant and townhouse' right in the centre of Kilkenny. Thanks to owners Paul and Paula Byrne, it brings a dash of contemporary chic to the city.
The dining room is a large rectangular space at the back of the hotel, with clean lines, leather screens and an open kitchen visible along one side; there's also a big courtyard for al fresco meals on balmy evenings.
Local ingredients feature strongly on the menu, although there's a global diversity to most of the dishes. To begin, look for scallops with rocket salad and beurre blanc, blackened chicken Caesar salad or deep-fried salmon risotto cake spiked with wasabi. Following on, expect tandoori cod with roasted vegetables and minted yoghurt, chicken Maryland with corn cakes or braised lamb shank on mash with buttered spinach and port jus. Desserts tend to be uncomplicated ideas like lemon meringue tart or chocolate truffle and orange torte. The 50-bin wine list provides reasonably priced drinking from good sources.
