Review on The Malton, Garden Room Restaurant
Formerly the Great Southern, this grand Victorian railway hotel has been ambitiously renovated by its new owners and re-launched as The Malton. The imposing pillared entrance and ivy-clothed façade are much as before, and the place still oozes old-school opulence.
The magnificent, newly restored Garden Room restaurant is famed for its spectacular domed ceiling embellished with gold leaf. Here diners can enjoy lovely views of the landscaped grounds as well as professionally executed dishes in the style of baked tranche of salmon with dill beurre blanc, individual beef Wellington or Barbary duck breast with baby pears poached in red wine. To finish, try the 'slow spicy death by chocolate' or the hazelnut mousse sandwich in a chocolate cookie.
Alternatively, try Pepper's, a strikingly contemporary, brasserie-style restaurant offering well-crafted dishes like confit of duck on turnip purée with chorizo and ginger jus or grilled sea bass fillet with mango and pepper salsa.
