Review on Man Friday
One of the longest running and best-known restaurants in Kinsale, Man Friday is in the picturesque Scilly district, a short drive from the town centre. It stands high up overlooking the harbour and is spread over four floors (including a conservatory). The atmosphere is distinctly tropical, with a palm-shaded passage leading to the restaurant and seats around the bar hewn from palm tree stumps.
Philip and Joss Horgan have been in residence since 1978, and Philip's cooking continues to attract the crowds. Irish steaks and seafood platters are perennial favourites, but the seasonal menu might also list herb-crusted rack of lamb with red wine and rosemary jus, grilled fillet of turbot with crab and pink peppercorn sauce, plus desserts ranging from strawberry crème brûlée to chocolate, hazelnut and almond torte.
Literary buffs might like to know that the restaurant's name is an oblique reference to Daniel Defoe (author of 'Robinson Crusoe'), who came to Kinsale in 1690 and stayed for a year.
