The Sandbar & Seafood Co is one of the chic frontrunners on Leigh on Sea's Broadway drag, this family-owned restaurant is a great local favourite, offering a zesty menu of seafood dishes in unfussy contemporary surroundings. The place is spread over two floors, with sleek black decor, an open fire in the lounge and photos of chefs on the walls.
Local seafood forms the cornerstone of the weekly changing menu, although the kitchen brings plenty of diversity to the table. Roast cod is served with spicy sag aloo, sea bass is given Mediterranean treatment with roasted peppers, artichoke and basil dressing, while scallops are coated in Japanese breadcrumbs and finished with fast-fried cabbage, soy dressing and crispy seaweed.
There are always some alternatives for meat eaters and veggies, ranging from devilled lamb's kidneys or roast duck breast with Victoria plum sauce to wild mushroom and marrowfat pea risotto. Fish-friendly whites show up well on the wine list, which favours small family-run vineyards.
