Review on The Horse & Groom Inn

Fronted by a tree-sheltered lawn and surrounded by its own paddock, the sixteenth-century Horse & Groom Inn is currently reaping the benefits of a serious but sympathetic refurbishment.

Locally sourced produce is used to telling effect, and just about everything comes from within a 40-mile radius of the pub. The result is a range of modern dishes embracing gastro-pub classics such as Mr Parson’s handmade local sausages with mashed potato, kale and red wine gravy or rack of British lamb, oven roasted and served with gratin potatoes, Spring greens and a mint scented jus together with a great selection of platters, suitable for two to share as a starter or a lighter option for a main course.

The Horse & Groom boasts Wiltshire's only 'outside bar', plus a stunning walled garden and children's play area; its reputation for fine hospitality also extends to stylish accommodation for those wanting to stay a while.

Sorry but it was a Disappointing Experience

The only plus point was the utterly charmingly efficient waitress-come-meeter-and-greeter.

One should not need to ask for lemon for a G&T. Upon being seated the musac was intrusively loud and non-relaxing (one of Beethoven's bad hair days), but a polite request for it to be changed was pleasingly granted.
Having perused the menu on the web before arrival, expectations had been set which were not actually deliverable. Of the 11 or so main dishes on the 'virtual' menu only 4 were on the actual menu, and particularly disappointing was that of the 5 steak dishes there turned out to be just a choice of one. It wasn't just that there had been a rush and that dishes were 'orf', the actual menu bore little resemblance to the advertised menu. One felt duped.

Ok, having selected a steak from the choice of one variety, you could have any sauce as long as it was bearnaise. My request for some sort of mushroom-based sauce was agreed to.
Looking forward to that sorbet palate-cleanser afterwards, it would seem that it had not set that day, so a rather dense, cloey vanilla ice cream alternative was the nearest alternative.

When asked about the discrepancy between the menu displayed - AND DESCRIBED SEDUCTIVELY - on the website, and the actual menu delivered at table, it was brushed aside with a simple 'oh, the website hasn't been updated'. This is so wrong on at least three fronts - a) such a business should keep its website updated, b) the actual menu offers too little choice in terms of both the number of main courses and the variety, and c) one felt duped and deceived, as if I'd seen an upmarket Bentley advertised, only to find on viewing that it turned out to be Del Boy's 3-wheeler that was for sale.

Would I recommend the place ? Not even at half the inflated prices. It promised so much and delivered so little. I'd be surprised if the restaurant survived without change. Yes, with a misleading website, deliberate or not, you'll get people going there - but only once - like us, they won't go back, and they'll tell their friends. They'll go to buy the Bentley, not the 3-wheeler. Sorry.
