Review on Rectory Hotel
In an endearingly serene Cotswold hamlet not far from Malmesbury, the Rectory Hotel is a picture of English charm surrounded by three acres of formal walled gardens complete with a sunken Victorian pool. There are views of the village church â€" and everything else besides â€" from most tables in the beamed and wood-panelled restaurant.
The menu proudly proclaims its ‘British’ loyalties, adding that ‘the majority of the produce with the exception of fish is sourced within 30 miles of the hotel’. Check out what’s on offer: in summer it might be English garden pea soup with smoked Wiltshire bacon and parsley oil, Cornish cod topped with a soft herb crust on tomato risotto with a basil dressing, local Hereford ribeye steak with fat chips, roast plum tomatoes and a sauté of mushrooms â€" not forgetting Pimms jelly with poached peaches and vanilla cream or summer berry trifle scented with elderflowers. The wine list roams around the globe and promises decent drinking at fair prices.
