Review on Akbar's
A new addition to the burgeoning Akbar's group, this youngblood in the centre of Manchester follows the same path as its elder siblings across the north of England. Part of its crowd-pulling attraction is the colourfully exuberant décor, which comes complete with all manner of OTT designer features in the jam-packed dining areas.
The kitchen has no truck with new wave gestures. Instead it offers traditional North Indian cookery without pretensions. Baltis brought to the table in iron pots make their presence felt forcefully alongside old favourites such as lamb samosas and chicken dhansak.
There are also a few less familiar items, including chicken liver tikka, fish pakoras and chamgidar (three different meats cooked together). Huge naan breads hang suspended from metal frames, and jugs of lassi suit the food if you don't fancy beer or wine. See Akbar's website for other branches in the region.
