Review on Mr Cooper's House and Garden

Set within the iconic Midland Hotel in the heart of Manchester, Mr Cooper's House and Garden sits alongside their fine dining restaurant called The French. It takes it's name from a well known figure in Manchester, Mr Cooper whose house and famous gardens where he grew fruit, vegetables and flowers were situated on the site of the hotel in 1819. The Cooper family would open the grounds to the public periodically, giving them the opportunity to come and admire the gardens and have picnics there.

Located on the ground floor of the hotel, the décor pays homage to Mr Cooper's garden of long ago, so diners are able to experience summer al fresco dining throughout the year. The unique garden room with glittering chandeliers is made with natural materials, complete with bird boxes, a cascading wall of plants, a 30ft tree and gazebo, as well as a 50-cover bar comprising a luxurious library featuring curved seating and booth areas.

Robert Taylor holds the reins of the kitchen having previously worked at Aiden Byrne's Manchester House. The kitchen sources produce from around the globe, as well as from the restaurant's own farms for an inventive menu which changes with the seasons. Typical starters include deep fried prawns, mango and chorizo marmalade or chicken wings in pomegranate molasses, chives and sepia noodles. Main courses pick up the theme with mussel, monkfish and potato romesco or Cumbrian rib steak, truffle pudding and purple potato latkes. Desserts are an enticing mix of flavours with white chocolate cake with pineapple-cardamom compote or peanut parfait, marinated strawberries and sweet cucumber syrup.

A well-researched wine list offers bottles from across the globe, as well as signature cocktails and beers. Children are welcome and have their own menu and this delightful informal restaurant is a welcome addition to Manchester's thriving dining scene.
