Review on Hotel du Vin & Bistro
The Newcastle branch of the well-regarded Hotel du Vin & Bistro group is set in the former home of the Tyne Steam Shipping Company, located on the banks of the River Tyne with excellent views of the Quayside and bridges. The red-bricked Edwardian building has received the trademark HDV treatment and is a stylish venue boasting 42 bedrooms, bistro, Laroche tasting room, two stunning private dining rooms, Bubble bar and a courtyard for al fresco dining.
The kitchen offers traditional French bistro fare featuring daily specials, using fresh locally sourced seasonal organic ingredients where possible. The bistro features a crowd pleasing menu that works its way through starters such as moules de vin, mussels steamed in white wine, finished with butter and parsley or sautéed mushrooms on brioche toast with Madeira cream. Main courses follow the theme with steak haché, fried duck egg and Bois Boudain, chopped Scottish steak, bound with onions, parsley, char-grilled and served with potato rosti and a tomato relish or lemon sole baked in a shallot and grape sauce. Finish with classic desserts in the shape of apple tarte tatin with crème Normande or crème brûlée.
There is a first-class wine list to complement the menu, with a knowledgeable sommelier on hand to guide you through the selections.
