Review on Watergate Bay Hotel, Zacry’s
Watergate Bay now ranks as Cornwall's funkiest surfing and water-sports hotspot, and this hotel is right at the centre of the action. It stands – literally – 'on the beach' and makes the most of legendary views; it's also run in tandem with the Extreme Sports Academy, which provides facilities for all manner of trendy pursuits ranging from wave-skiing to kite buggying.
The space that occupied their original Brasserie has now been morphed into a new restaurant called Zacry's, named after the square rocky outcrop towards the south end of the beach between Watergate Bay and Whipsiderry. The new interiors feature zinc-wrapped refectory tables with tan leather banquettes set on oak and tiled chevron flooring. There are large tables and smaller booths for more intimate dining, together with a private dining room and a step down from the main dining room, there's an area with floor to ceiling windows leading to the decked terrace.
Taking centre stage in the open kitchen is an indoor charcoal oven that showcases Neil's classical and contemporary dishes, with an emphasis on grilled meat and seafood. Expect starters in the shape of crispy rock shrimp, KP spicy mayo with white truffle oil or a terrine of ham hock, pickled veg and pease pudding. Main courses offer Cornish venison, dauphinoise, kale, carrot puree and juniper sauce or whole lemon sole, baby potatoes, brown shrimp and capers.
Sun lovers and beach addicts can get daytime refuelling at the Living Space café or the Beach Hut – 'just inches from the sand'.
