Review on French Living
French Living comprises a shop/café stocking groceries and provisions, where you can refuel with a cup of 'grand crème' coffee in between browsing the shelves. Below stairs is the bistro, a dyed-in-the-wool red-brick cellar done out in the style of a provincial family brasserie (complete with rustic furniture, gingham cloths and French songs playing on the radio).
Menus change with the seasons and the aim is to serve 'meals that make French people feel at home and British friends remember their holidays'. In winter, for example, the kitchen conjures up warming 'potage aux légumes', classic Alpine tartiflette savoyarde, rich cassoulets and dishes like fillet of venison with red wine and blueberry sauce.
For fish lovers, there might be traditional 'waterzoï' of mussels enriched with a julienne of vegetables, freshwater zander or fillet of salmon with mushroom duxelle and fennel sauce, while desserts are in the rich tradition of crème brûlée, baked fruits with rum sabayon, and 'craquelin au chocolat' served with blackcurrant and juniper liqueur ice cream. Unpasteurised cheeses, French beers, ciders and good-value wines are bonus points.
