Review on The Neptune Restaurant with Rooms
New England comes to North Norfolk in the shape of this revamped nineteenth-century coaching inn. Inside, it has been transformed into a pleasing retreat, defined by soothing brown tones, white clapboard walls, replica boats and dramatic photographs.
Kevin and Jacki Mangeolles made a name for themselves at the George Hotel on the Isle of Wight before heading out to East Anglia and re-claiming their Michelin star. They make proper use of the region's produce - especially seafood - for a repertoire of sharp contemporary dishes along the lines of Brancaster crab and pink grapefruit risotto, smoked haddock with Thornham oysters and apple salad, and fillets of plaice with fried squid, greens beans and salsify.
Away from fish, expect a clever combo of ham terrine with roast garlic mayonnaise, deep-fried egg and a frothy shot of parsley soup, crispy Courtyard Farm belly pork with celeriac purée. Aberdeen Angus ribeye with braised beef, onion purée and red wine sauce, and an intriguing warm vegetable and herb salad with mineral water dressing. To conclude, there might be condensed milk rice pudding with local quince jam or warm prune and almond cake with roasted fig, coffee ice cream, tonka bean and almond sauce. There are East Anglian bottled beers behind the bar and the wine list is a sharp selection of around 50 bins from producers worldwide.
