Review on The Highland Drove Inn
Since 1998, the father-and-son team of Donald and Paul Newton have revived the fortunes of this centuries-old inn and have transformed it into the hub of social life around Great Salkeld.
The place is still known for its beer and hospitality, although food also matters these days. Meals are served in Kyloes Restaurant (the word refers to the name of the original Highland Cattle bred on the Western Isles) and the kitchen is happy to ring the changes: expect to find sea bass, brill and salmon sharing the bill with mallard and steaks from traditionally reared Cumbrian herds.
Typical dishes from the dinner menu might include feuilleté of lamb's kidneys with mustard, juniper and cream, honeyed duck breast with black pudding, fried apples and cider sauce, rabbit and bacon pie, and lemon posset with shortbread biscuit.
