Review on White Star Tavern & Dining Rooms
A big player on Southampton's up-and-coming Oxford Street, this stylish gastro pub/restaurant was originally a hotel for ocean-going travellers. The imposing old building has been tastefully renovated, but still retains much of its original décor including swathes of wood panelling over the walls, pillars and ceilings, big windows etched with the White Star logo and several fireplaces.
Award-winning food is available right through the day, although you can eat more formally at lunch and dinner if you wish. 'Bar bites' such as marinated chicken wings and crispy whitebait with tartare sauce give way to starters such as grilled mackerel on roasted vine tomato bruschetta or chicken liver and foie gras parfait with chutney and toast. In addition there are salads and main courses ranging from fishcakes with poached egg, fries and chive butter sauce to char-grilled cutlet of Somerset pork with crushed potato confit and buttered Savoy cabbage.
Sandwiches are served until 3.00pm and the choice of desserts runs to lemon tart and bread-and-butter pudding with sauce anglaise. To drink, there are 'winningly chosen' wines, imported beers and a raft of classic and up-to-the-minute cocktails. Tables outside are ideal for watching the action on Southampton's 'Restaurant Row'. Luxurious guest accommodation is now available.
