Review on Willerby Manor, Figs Brasserie
Handily placed in landscaped grounds just four miles from the centre of Hull, Willerby Manor was once home to a shipping magnate, but now runs as a purpose-built hotel with excellent facilities including a health club. The revamped Figs Brasserie (formerly Everglades) offers easy, family-friendly dining (and alfresco possibilities) throughout the day, taking in late breakfasts and traditional afternoon teas as well as lunch and dinner.
Locally sourced Yorkshire produce is high on the agenda, from Whitby crab cakes with watercress and chilli jelly to breaded scampi served in yesterday's newspaper or Yorkshire fillet steak with beetroot and potato rösti and hollandaise. Elsewhere, expect Lowna goats' cheese risotto cake with soft poached duck egg, stir-fried duck breast with sugar snaps, asparagus, ratte potatoes and oranges, herb-crusted pork fillet with linguine, and desserts along the lines of local strawberry vacherin with passion fruit cream or English trifle. Open and closed, hot and cold sandwiches are also on offer.
