Review on The Birch
Like much else in Woburn, the Birch looks confident and affluent. It’s a four-square cream-painted building within easy reach of the famous local attractions and has been given a gentrified country-style makeover. Inside, there are rugs on the floors, Venetian blinds at the windows and colourful artwork on the walls. The dining room is on two levels and it comes complete with a pleasant conservatory extension.
The kitchen is in one corner, and its focal point is an open griddle: take your pick from the array of steaks and seafood, then decide how you want everything cooked. Elsewhere, the menu adopts a Mediterranean pose, with the likes of seared scallops, buttered leek and potato salad and balsamic syrup, or bacon and Stilton risotto with pesto and shaved Parmesan, or even duck breast wrapped in Parma ham.
You can also get pub stalwarts such as Cumberland sausages, while desserts could range from passion fruit and Grand Marnier soufflé with a chocolate granache to orange bread-and-butter pudding.
