Review on The Clink Cardiff
A trip to the local jail for a meal may not be the top of the agenda for most diners, but the denizens of Cardiff are queuing up for the experience. The Clink restaurant opened in September 2012 set within the grounds of HMP Cardiff, staffed by 28 Category D prisoners from HMP Cardiff and HMP Prescoed, and supplemented by a further 12 prisoners on the farm at the latter, it has been the recipient of several prestigious awards. It's a charity-run enterprise that is dedicated to the rehabilitation and reintegrating of inmates, training them towards City & Guilds NVQs in Hospitality & Catering and Customer Service. The restaurant has a smart contemporary décor and such has been its success The Clink has had to extend its opening hours to cater for demand.
Menus change with the seasons and many of the ingredients are grown by the inmates at the farms and gardens at Prescoed. On offer there might be rabbit and chorizo press with chorizo oil, porcini mushroom cream and pickled chervil before a main course of pan-fried fillet of cod with leek and potato rosti, sauté savoy cabbage and vanilla butter sauce or loin of venison with venison tortelloni, textures of artichoke and confit potato. There's indulgent desserts to finish in the shape of chocolate and peanut butter tart with marshmallows and toffee dust or maple syrup baked fig with almond sponge and cinnamon ice cream.
Service is polite and efficient, but unfortunately no alcohol is allowed on the premises.
