Review on The Muddlers Club
The Muddlers Club is an exciting new arrival to the Belfast dining scene, tucked away between Waring Street and Exchange Place in the heart of the historic Cathedral quarter. Named after the secret society that met there over 200 years ago, it's the brainchild of acclaimed chef Gareth McCaughey, who has previously worked alongside Stephen Toman at his Michelin starred OX restaurant in Belfast.
A modern bistro style restaurant, the moodily lit open-plan room looks out onto a small alleyway covered with street artwork. The interiors have been created by North Belfast designers, Oscar&Oscar, who were also responsible for the décor of the award winning Ox restaurant. It's a warehouse space with a funky vibe, lively music plays in the background, there's distressed wooden tables and chairs and exposed bulb lighting.
It's Gareth's modern bistro fare that is getting rave reviews featuring a concise menu that showcases first-class seasonal produce. Expect the likes of smoked sea trout, roe, white onion risotto, curry butter and borage or seared beef, burnt carrot, tarragon, yolk and chicory amongst the starters. When it comes to main courses you might choose the duck, red cabbage, celeriac, mustard and parsnip or fish fans will enjoy the halibut, white beans, crispy ham, clams and black olives. Bringing up the rear are desserts such as pear, toffee and meringue or espresso parfait, chestnut and orange pannacotta.
To complement the food The Muddlers Club has a well considered wine list and an extensive cocktail menu.
