Review on Rick Stein
In November 2015, Rick Stein's burgeoning empire marched forward with the opening of his eponymous restaurant in a lovely setting in Sandbanks, on the exclusive Poole peninsula, 40 years after the opening of his famous Seafood Restaurant in Padstow.
Spread over two floors, the modern contemporary interiors have been designed by Jill Stein, son Ed and daughter-in-law Kate, who have taken inspiration from the local coastal surroundings, resulting in an elegant and stylish setting. In keeping with the maritime surroundings, there's historical nautical charts from Imray, and a beautiful hand-made pebble mosaic from artist Maggy Howarth, while menu artwork was produced by Dorset artist Jon Adam.
The ground floor space has a no reservation policy, and is available for more casual dining, where you can take a seat at the bar and watch the chefs in action, or alternatively just pop in for a cup of coffee, a relaxing glass of wine or cocktail. The upstairs dining room seats 120, with well laid tables set on a modern wood flooring, affording panoramic views across Poole Harbour.
Obviously, seafood cookery is the business of the day, and the local catch is used to telling effect, but if fish isn't your thing there are also carnivorous alternatives such as chargrilled lamb cutlets with aioli and a tomato, red onion and thyme salad or barbecued sumac chicken with grilled aubergine puree and pomegranate molasses. Otherwise enjoy starters in the shape of sea bass ceviche with avocado and red chilli or crisp smoked mackerel with Thai green mango and green papaya salad. Main courses could include grilled miso salmon with rice noodles, spring onions and beansprouts or a hake casserole with wild mushrooms, roasted shallots and Serrano ham. To finish there's a delicious bread and butter pudding with sultanas and apricot glaze or plum panna cotta.
