Review on Malmaison
Malmaison in the spa town of Cheltenham is the fifteenth member to join this well-established stable of boutique hotels. Set in a majestic whitewashed Regency villa, it's just around the corner from Montpelier gardens and a short walk from Cheltenham's Promenade. The hotel not only has top-class facilities, but the bonus of a stylish contemporary brasserie within a glass conservatory, overlooked by an open kitchen. When the weather is warm guests can dine al fresco on their beautiful terrace.
The kitchen mixes European themes and techniques with locally sourced produce for a lively menu of sharp modern dishes. Expect starters along the lines of pan roasted sea scallops, roast sweetcorn purée, chorizo, coriander and spring onion or prime steak carpaccio, watercress, Parmigiano Reggiano and truffle dressing. From the Grille meat eaters might opt for the pan roasted Black Angus New York strip steaks served with their signature slow roasted onion and soubise purée and homemade steak sauce. If meat isn't your bag there's Severn & Wye smoked haddock fish cake, spinach, poached egg and grain mustard sauce. Desserts maintain the European momentum with a classic crème brûlée or Valrhona dark and milk chocolate torte paired with crème Chantilly.
