Review on Rick Stein Marlborough
Following on from his recent opening in Barnes, South West London, Rick Stein's latest venture is in the charming old market town of Marlborough in Wiltshire. Located on the second widest high street in England, it's set over two floors in the lovely Grade II listed Loran House. The interiors have once again been designed by Jill Stein together with son Ed and daughter-in-law Kate, creating a contemporary décor in sophisticated hues whilst staying sympathetic to the building's heritage.
Kevin Chandler heads up the kitchen having worked under such luminaries as Gordon Ramsey, Jason Atherton and Marcus Wareing. Fresh seafood is the name of the game with dishes along the lines of tuna carpaccio with a mustard dressing, capers, tomato and mint or salt and pepper squid with coriander, chilli and soy. Main courses also provide ample choice with lemon sole, basil and black olive butter or an Indonesian curry with sea bass, cod and prawns served with basmati rice and a green bean and grated coconut salad with crisp fried shallots, garlic and chilli. If fish isn't your preference, you could opt for guinea fowl and bacon terrine with beetroot chutney and bitter leaf salad to start followed by salt pork belly with split pea purée and sauerkraut. Children are made welcome and have their own menu or there's smaller portions available from the a la carte menu.
Group wine buyer Charlie Stein has compiled a carefully crafted wine list with many lovely options available by the glass.
