Review on Sugar Boat
Restaurateur Will Smith who founded Michelin starred Arbutus and Wild Honey with chef Anthony Demetre, has opened the Sugar Boat a contemporary bistro, bar and wine shop in Helensburgh, which is situated on the northern shore of the Clyde estuary, around 20 miles northwest of Glasgow. Having sold his interests in London, he has returned to the town where he managed the Georgian Room at Cameron house in the mid-1990's.
Formerly housing a casual deli overlooking Colquhoun Square, the interiors have been given a smart makeover by Glasgow interior design firm Surface ID, featuring exposed brick and wood-panelled walls. Luxurious dark blue and contrasting orange banquette seating is set against wooden tables. When the weather obliges, there's also seating in the rear courtyard as well as the terrace at the front of the restaurant.
Leading the kitchen is chef Scott Smith, who previously plied his trade at well regarded London restaurants such as the Wild Honey, Arbutus and Odette’s. Open all day from breakfast through to lunch, afternoon tea and dinner, the menu focuses on seasonal, local ingredients. From the a la carte menu you might opt for crisp ox tongue, pickled mushrooms and green sauce before moving on to a main course of Sugar Boat bouillabaisse, mullet, bass, cod, fennel, potato and leek. Amongst the desserts look for such delights as almond clafoutis paired with salted caramel ice cream or maybe cold chocolate mousse with passion fruit and praline.
There's an extensive wine list of over 100 bins to choose from, together with craft ales and cocktails.
