Review on Forage & Chatter
Forage & Chatter hidden away in Edinburgh's West End and located in the former premises of Edinburgh Larder has rapidly hit the high notes since its launch by Cameron McNeil. His previous experience includes working alongside Robin Hutson at his successful Lime Wood group of hotels, so Cameron was well placed to open his own venture. It is certainly paying off dividends because the restaurant was awarded the best local restaurant in the 2019 edition of the Good Food Guide.
Inside it has undergone a complete refurbishment with a homely and rustic style throughout. Reclaimed wood and Balmoral tweed furnishings are set against a feature wall of Stucco Veneziano. Hand stained and varnished wooden tables tops and shelves are decorated with little plants emphasising the foraging theme, while walls are adorned with framed taxidermy butterflies and paintings of mushrooms. A raised area with bright purple chairs is a perfect place for a private dining area and there's a lovely copper-topped bar at the front of the restaurant for drinks and cocktails.
The kitchen only uses ingredients sourced within a 25 mile radius and other produce is supplied by a professional forager. Among the repertoire of starters you might find cured Monkfish, kohlrabi, seaweed cracker and citrus before moving on to a main course of pork belly and cheek, carrot, spinach, pickled onion and jus. For a sweet-toothed finale enjoy a Manjari chocolate crémeux, hazelnut and praline ice cream, otherwise opt for the local Scottish cheese served with sultana, fennel and pine nut chutney.
The menu is complemented by bio-dynamic and organic wines, zingy cocktails and Scottish craft beers.
