Review on Skosh
Skosh is chef Neil Bentinck's debut restaurant set in the heart of historic York, just beyond the 12th century Micklegate bar, the southern entrance into the city through which many monarchs have entered. Distinguished by its slate grey and bright canary yellow frontage, the colour palette is continued inside. The modern dining room is a pared back space, with the most sought after seats located at the chrome counter in front of the open kitchen, where you can watch all the theatre of the chefs in action.
Neil's CV reads well, he has honed his culinary skills in esteemed restaurants such as The Pipe and Glass in Beverley, Northcote, The Star Inn at Harome and Van Zellar. Skosh takes its name from the Japanese work sukoshi meaning a small amount, which ties in with his remarkable food of small sharing plates, executed with great flavours, style, enthusiasm and passion. It's no surprise that his accomplished cooking has resulted in a number of accolades including the prestigious Restaurant of the Year at the White Rose Awards, the largest tourism awards ceremony in the UK.
Emphasising local ingredients where possible, Neil's dishes reflect his heritage, he's the son of a Yorkshire mother and Indian father, together with his travels throughout Asia and Australia. Among the delights on offer there's Goosnargh duck 'Thai' style with runner beans and watermelon or maybe Skosh fried chicken with brown butter hollandaise. When it comes to seafood options there's poached sea trout, nahm Jim, dwarf bean and hazelnut or hand dived scallop served raw with tomato, elderflower and green peppercorn. To conclude there's a savoury option like gorgonzola dolce - apricot, almond and sake or for those with a sweet tooth enjoy cone 'n' popsicle - chocolate, cherry and spice.
The concise wine list is available by the bottle, carafe and glass, and there's an exclusive wine journal showcasing more exclusive options. Skosh also has well crafted seasonal cocktails alongside a selection of local and international craft beers.
Skosh is also featured in: Michelin Guide, AA Guide
