Review on El Gato Negro Tapas - Liverpool
Having established his award winning El Gato Negro Tapas in Manchester in 2016, Chef Patron and Creative Director Simon Shaw launched a sibling restaurant in 2019 in the heart of Liverpool. Laid out across one floor, the restaurant has taken on the site formerly occupied by Steven Gerrard's Vincent Café.
Occupying a beautiful stone-clad Walker house, part of the landmark Exchange Flags building, it overlooks the iconic Nelson monument and Liverpool Town Hall. An elegant open-plan restaurant and bar with counter seats at the charcuterie counter, as well as intimate booths, seating up to 240 diners it offers a wide range of dining and drinking options. Guests can also take advantage of their fully covered and heated patio with views across the historic square for al fresco dining.
The menu offers a menu that reflects the seasons showcasing modern and traditional Spanish tapas designed for sharing. Graze your way through dishes like chargrilled lamb skewers with spiced chickpea purée and harissa and roast beetroot with whipped Monte Enebro cheese, orange, dill and hazelnuts. Another option would be their charcuterie board consisting of jamón serrano; black truffle salchichón with cornichons; aged Manchego with bittersweet green figs; Monte Enebro goats cheese, crystal bread and thyme honey. For those with a preference for fish there's chargrilled octopus, fondant potatoes, capers, shallots and aioli or crispy fried baby squid with lemon aioli. To finish on a sweet note enjoy caramelised vanilla rice pudding with strawberries or a chocolate tart served with orange Chantilly cream.
El Gato Negro showcases an interesting wine list sourced from independent producers, together with sherries, signature cocktails, beers and ciders.
