Review on Bastion
Occupying a corner position at the junction of Market Street and Main Street, Bastion restaurant is set in the picturesque seafront town of Kinsale in West Cork. It has been owned by chef Paul McDonald and his wife Helen McDonald since 2015, and although they have held a Bib Gourmand since 2016, they were delighted to be awarded a coveted Michelin star in the 2020 edition of the prestigious Guide.
It's a sleek modern dining room that exudes poise and self confidence, a chic but cosy space that is laid out over two rooms. Decorated in a muted palette with interesting black and white photos framing the walls, chunky pale wood tables set with flickering candles adds a glow in the evenings.
Paul offers a choice of tasting menus that showcases incredibly fresh and flavourful choices, with a real dedication to local, seasonally sourced produce. He runs an industrious kitchen where practically everything is made-in-house, from the tasty bread at the beginning to the delicious sweet served with your coffee. Among the many modern dishes on the carte you might see the likes of roasted cod fillet, Jerusalem artichoke, apple and Iberico or from the land rabbit and foie gras roulade, golden raisins, Sauterne and violet mustard, and among the desserts passion fruit, aerated chocolate and blueberry.
There's an excellent wine list of about 150 bins to complement the dishes, as well as Prosecco on tap. The well pitched service provided by Helen and her team injects friendliness and warmth to proceedings.
