Review on The Real Greek
The Bankside outpost of The Real Greek mini-chain is a must for anyone visiting the South Bank, as it stands right next to the Globe Theatre and only a stone's throw from the Tate Modern. Like its siblings, it deals in genuine street food: skewered souvlaki wrapped in sheaths of warm grilled bread are one of the main attractions, and the choice varies seasonally (pork from November to May, lamb, chicken and vegetables at other times of the year).
Mezedes are also perennial favourites, especially at lunchtime: look for little dolmades, salt cod fritters, Feta 'from the barrel' and gigandes plaki (oven-baked Kastorian giant beans in tomato and herb sauce). Desserts are plain and simple offerings like Greek yoghurt with honey and walnuts, chocolate cake or delicate 'delights' (sweets scented with rosewater). Drink Greek beer, an ouzo-spiked cocktail or one of the down-home native wines.
The Real Greek brand is spreading like wildfire across the capital: there are also outlets in Paddington Street W1, Long Acre Lane, Covent Garden, WC2, Hoxton Market N1, Southwark Bridge Road SE1, Old Spitalfields Market E1 and Westfield Shopping Centre.
