Review on Northbank
Northbank with a splendid location at the foot of the Millennium Bridge, looking across the Thames from the City to Tate Modern and The Globe, is one of the assets of this newcomer (on the site of the defunct Just The Bridge). New owner Christian Butler (ex-the Baltic) has revitalised the interior, with leather upholstered booths on raised platforms making the most of great riverside views; there's also a tempting terrace for those wanting to venture outside.
Heading the kitchen is John Harrison who has created a modern British menu with an emphasis on produce from small independent British suppliers, particularly Lake District Farmers for their top quality beef. Fashionable Englishness crops up regularly with the likes of pig's head croquette with caramelised cider apples or pot roasted chicken with Cornish mead. Other ideas have a European edge, witness a starter of tuna carpaccio with mango, lime and Cornish chilli salsa or a main course of Falmouth crab linguine with lobster bisque and coriander.
Desserts keep the flag flying with the likes of warm treacle tart and Cornish clotted cream or Bakewell tart with cherry custard. Ciders, meads and eclectic New York style cocktails also show up on the drinks list, as well as a fine wine menu with many available by the glass or carafe.
