Review on Sweetings

If you're searching for the best fish and seafood in the heart of the city, you'll be hard pushed to find a better place to go than Sweetings.

With 150 years of tradition, this venue is a good old fashioned British pub which is full of character and characterful customers. In true tradition, the extremely friendly staff know all of their regulars who are given undivided attention and treated with a personal service. Any new comers are also given the same treatment so it's not long before they too, make Sweetings a regular fixture in their diary.

People return to Sweetings time and time again to sample the fantastic selection of fresh fish and seafood; Dover sole, lobster, sea bass, john dory, oysters, to name but a few which comes daily from the coast and is prepared in a simple way to retain the superior quality and wonderful flavour of the fish. Old Mr Barford used to be a local fishmonger and he knows all the best suppliers from Cornwall to Scotland. Oysters are served only in season from September to April. They have bought oysters from the West Mersey beds for the last 110 years!

After a mouth watering main course why not choose a good old fashioned sweet. With choices including sticky toffee pudding, jam roly poly, spotted dick; even the fullest stomach couldn't resist these home made treats.

All this can be washed down with a pint of the good stuff. You can get just about anything in a pint glass but remember, this is a pub, so water is definitely off the menu!

Diners can either sit and soak up the vibrant atmosphere in the main restaurant where the only tunes are the ones made from customers' vocal chords or choose to sit together at one of the 3 long refectory style tables in the back room where the atmosphere is just as mad. The whole building is described as "organised chaos" so it's not surprising that Sweetings is one of the busiest and noisiest venues in the city, particularly on a Friday.

For those who haven't been to Sweetings before, just look out for a Grade 2 listed building that looks like an old Fish Mongers with tiled frontage and fish, seafood and roes displayed on ice with buckets of chilled wine. Once you've sampled the delights of this amazing "club without a membership fee", you too will return time and time again.
