Review on Belgo Centraal
Belgo still lays claim to being top dog in the capital when it comes to mussels, frites and Belgian beers, although it offers much more than buckets of bivalves - the Covent Garden branch (Centraal) is an atmospheric basement, fronted by waiters dressed up like Trappist monks; take your pick from the Bier Hall with its refectory tables or the main restaurant, which sports more intimate booths.
Pride of place goes to the pots and platters of organic mussels (choose from half a dozen versions ranging from red Thai to Provençal), but the menu also promises a mixed bag of Belgian and European dishes ranging from pork and leek sausages with 'stoemp' (Belgian mash), De Koninck beer and onion jus to char-grilled sea bass with fennel salad and dill hollandaise. There are spit-roast chickens too, plus a choice of desserts including Brussels-style waffles with Belgian chocolate sauce.
Belgo is famed for its special deals and promotions (everything from 'beat the clock' to 'lobsterfest') and it's worth keeping your eyes peeled for the latest deals. Belgo Noord is at 72 Chalk Farm Road, NW1 and the company also runs three Bierodrome bars on Upper Street, Islington N1, Clapham High Street, SW4 and Kingsway WC2.
