Review on Horse and Groom
Situated in a hilltop village within easy reach of the busy A44, the Horse and Groom looks every inch the archetypal honey-coloured Cotswold stone inn. It's a Grade II-listed Georgian building that has recently been revitalised and transformed into a country pub/restaurant with pleasant accommodation and a charming landscaped garden. The Horse and Groom has been named the 2016 Pub of the Year in the Good Pub Guide 2016.
Proprietors Will and Tom Greenstock are no strangers to the hospitality business and their enthusiasm and skill have put the Horse and Groom firmly on the map. Local suppliers provide the kitchen with most of its raw materials and the results appear on a flexible daily-changing blackboard menu. Influences come from near and far, so expect anything from grilled fillet of wild sea trout with sautéed samphire and shallot butter sauce to shoulder of pork braised in milk with lemon and sage and served with wet polenta.
Starters are often colourful ideas such as tabbouleh with Swiss chard, roasted beetroot and fresh Ricotta, while desserts could range from vanilla crème brûlée with lime-marinated English strawberries to cherry and almond tart with Mascarpone cream.
The Horse and Groom also thrives as a busy village pub, with excellent real ales on draught, plus locally brewed Cotswold lager from the Cotswold Brewing Co. The wine list is short, well chosen and a perfect match for the food.
