Review on Brilliant Restaurant
Before moving to Britain, the Anand family ran the Brilliant Hotel in Nairobi, and they brought the name with them (although most people would say that the food is ‘brilliant’, too!). The menu doesn’t change much, but why tamper with something that is so successful and so genuine.
What you get is genuine Punjabi cooking right out of the top drawer, with impeccable raw materials and spot-on flavours across the board. Butter chicken (made to a family recipe) is a signature starter; otherwise choose fish pakora (made with tilapia), aloo tikki (potato cutlet with chick peas, yoghurt and tamarind sauce) or chicken tikka.
Main courses and ‘special meals’ for big parties cover mostly familiar territory, whether it’s chicken methi loaded with fenugreek, meat kofta or king prawn biryani. Vegetables include the oddly named ‘karahi Mexican mix’; also look for rolled-and-fried kulcha among the breads. Drink lassi or beer. The Anand brothers also own Madhu’s in nearby South Road.
