Review on The Botanist
The ETM group owned by Tom and Ed Martin have opened a second restaurant under The Botanist banner, sibling to the Chelsea branch on Sloane Square. The latest addition to their burgeoning portfolio is located at the food, drink and leisure development at Broadgate Circle, just steps away from Liverpool Street Station. Designed by Russell Sage Studio, the venue is set over two floors with a subterranean nightclub that's open until 2.00am and an expansive terrace for al fresco dining. It's a capacious all-day venue that is sleekly groomed with interiors featuring dark wood panelling, copper, brass and gold with luxurious leather banquettes. Look out for the stuffed swan over the staircase that leads down to the Soda Room, as well as the stuffed crocodile hanging over the central bar.
Former Head Chef of The Cadogan Arms in Chelsea is in charge of the kitchen, and he proposes a menu showcasing British and European dishes operating from breakfast through to lunch, dinner, weekend brunch and Sunday roasts. As a curtain raiser order lamb breast, broccoli, anchovy gribiche or from the sea there's seared king scallops, brown crab croquettes and fennel. Follow on with River Test trout, smoked mussel and bone marrow risotto and rainbow chard or Herdwick lamb, hazelnuts, samphire, broad beans and Puy lentils. Desserts are a high point whether you choose the pistachio brûlée, dolce de leche shortbread or the rocky road, toasted marshmallow and peanut ice cream.
The wine list is an international slate featuring a broad spread from across the world with options available by the glass, and there's an interesting signature cocktail menu.
