Review on Temper Soho
Carnivores are in for a treat at Temper where Scottish supremo barbecue chef Neil Rankin pays homage to succulent smoked and grilled meats. Located in the heart of Soho, a short walk from Oxford Circus Underground Station, Rankin made his name at restaurants such as Pitt Cue Co and John Salt, before establishing his own venture the Smokehouse in Islington.
Laid out over two floors with a light and airy 7-seater ground-floor taco bar, the main action takes place in the large windowless basement with moody lighting. A marble green counter with bar stools offers diners a ringside view of the theatrical open kitchen, where huge slabs of meat sizzle over wood and charcoal in the long fire pit. Walls are wood panelled and if you don't snag a seat at the counter, there's leather olive green banquettes in cosy booths set against tables covered in green marble.
Produce is carefully sourced from small independent suppliers and all meat is butchered in house. Why not start with pil pil prawn taco before moving on to smoked lamb shoulder or smoked goat served on flatbread with the options of pairing with sauces such as black pepper salsa or chipotle sour cream, and sides of beef fat potatoes with Ogleshield. If you still have room for a sweet-toothed finale, their deep fried cookie with fior di latte ice cream will fit the bill perfectly.
To complement the food there's an extensive wine list with plenty of options available by the glass, tasty cocktails and a drinks menu that focuses on gin, mezcal and whisky.
