Review on Greyhound Cafe

Occupying a corner position on Berners Street, the Greyound Cafe is the hotly anticipated new arrival of the first UK outpost of the brand which already operates 17 other venues across Asia. Originally launched as a fashion house in 1980, they opened their first restaurant in 1998 in the trendy Sukhumvit district of Bangkok.

The Fitzrovia branch is laid out over two floors with interiors created by B3 Designers featuring the groups monochrome colour scheme, and their famous black and white typography tiles in both English and Thai letters, covering the front of the counter surrounding the open kitchen. The ground floor replicates a traditional Thai grocery store with shelves of bric-a-brac, a hanging wicker installation takes centre stage and there's also woven paper fish and metal and paper cut art work. Downstairs guests are welcomed by a Bangkok street scene, with walls of corrugated metal and mock folding tables and brightly coloured chairs.

There's a vast menu serving Thai street food with modern influences along the lines of hot oil pork knuckle, a German-style golden fried pork knuckle with spicy tamarind curry paste, jaew sauce and sticky rice basket or from the sea poached cod in tangy sauce, meaty cod poached in spicy fish broth, with chopped chilli, tangy lime and its zest, shredded cabbage and baby carrots on the side. There's also a great array of desserts to finish with such as happy toast, thick white or wholewheat toast served with four toppings of Thai tea custard, Thai coffee custard, sea salt caramel and condensed milk or a sun-dried banana date cake with Thai traditional sun-dried banana, pecan and date and finished with velvety lime cream cheese frosting.

To accompany the menu there's craft beers from Phuket's Full Moon Brew Works, as well as cocktails in collaboration with the Mekhong spirit distillery such as Siamese Greyhound, Finlandia Grapefruit, honey, lime, grapefruit juice and mint.
