Review on Bala Roja
Bala Roja is the showpiece restaurant set within the luxury Hotel Es Principe in the southeast corner of Palma's old town, and just a 10 minute walk from the Church of Sant Jeroni and Cathedral of Santa Maria of Palma. Taking it's name from the cannonballs known as red balls, which were fired from the adjacent ramparts at the invading wooden warships in order to set them on fire. The restaurant has a contemporary décor in neutral colours with a wooden beamed ceiling and white washed walls. A unique glass floor reveals the preserved exposed excavations from a medieval tannery.
Executive Chef is talented Andreu Genestra, who holds a Michelin star at the restaurant set within the Hotel Predi Son Jaumell in the historical village of Capdepera. The menu focuses on the very finest local produce for artistically displayed dishes that change with the seasons. Diners can expect an appetiser of meringue of 'trencada' olives, corn with onions, salty 'polvorón', lemon and vegetable caviar before moving on to dishes like Mallorcan pork shoulder with almond cream, or maybe rice smoked aubergine, dried octopus and rabbit, concluding with a delicious dessert of tart au chocolat with macaroons.
