Review on Gold
Gold was unveiled in June 2019 on vibrant Portobello Road in the heart of Notting Hill, located in the premises that once housed the Portobello Gold pub which closed in 2017. Laid out over four floors, the bohemian interiors have been created by local designers Felix and Valerie von Bechtolsheim to reflect the industrial heritage of the area. The ground floor has a bar and open kitchen leading into a garden room with a retractable glass roof, while the first floor offers a lounge and dining room, with the second floor available for private functions. A unique mural by Portuguese street artist Vhils covers the front facade of the building.
Leading the kitchen is former River Café sous chef Theo Hill, who has devised a modern European menu designed for sharing, cooked in wood ovens or over open flames. Among the plates look for braised pork meatballs, san marzano tomatoes and grilled bread or Brixham crab spaghetti, fennel and chilli. Other options include wild sea bass carpaccio, finger limes, chilli and datterini tomatoes or maybe opt for the selection of charcuterie served with house pickles and grilled toast.
