Clifford's located on Fetter Lane in the city's legal district is the debut restaurant from Gemma Ellis, who trained at London's only Michelin-starred pub, The Harwood Arms in Fulham. Taking over the former site of the 28:50 wine bar, the subterranean restaurant is a cosy affair with bare brick and painted dark blue walls, with shelves lined with wine bottles and jars of preserves. Chunky oak tables are simply set with flickering candles and there's a few high tables and stools, together with seating at the late night cocktail bar which serves a tasty snack menu.

The restaurant kickstarts the day with breakfast and moves on to lunch and leisurely dinners, making excellent use of produce sourced from the British isles where possible. The concise menu allows the quality of the natural ingredients to shine through, witness a crispy egg and cod's roe or violet artichokes, red onion and hazelnuts amongst the starters. Main courses usher in roast and confit chicken served with new potatoes and cherry tomatoes or lemon sole meunière and samphire. Desserts also hit the button with a delicious croissant bread and butter pudding or a chocolate cake with boozy cherries.

There's an interesting wine list with options available by the glass, together with an ever-changing cocktail list with offerings like Life's a Peach, bourbon, elderflower liqueur and peach melba syrup.
