Review on Daffodil Mulligan

Occupying a corner site on City Road just steps from Old Street roundabout, Daffodil Mulligan launched in November 2019 on the former Nuala site which closed 10 months earlier. It's the third restaurant from illustrious Michelin-starred chef Richard Corrigan and he is joined by fellow Irishmen John Nugent who founded Green & Fortune, together with Toby Gibney from the legendary Irish Pub Gibney's of Malahide.

The venue takes its name from the daughter of the notorious Dublin seafood seller Biddy Mulligan, immortalised by songwriter Seamus Kavanagh in the 1930's song, 'Biddy Mulligan the pride of the Coombe'. Laid out over two floors, the main dining room is simply decorated with wood and wicker furniture, with the charcoal grill taking centre stage in the open kitchen. Downstairs there's a large saloon bar with intimate booths and a small stage for live music.

The kitchen under the leadership of Simon Merrick will source the vast majority of produce from Corrigan's country estate in Ireland, Virginia Park Lodge, while the 10-seater oyster bar on the ground floor will look exclusively to the waters around the British and Irish shores. Among the small plates you might see crab, lovage and pickled pear or maybe salt chilli chicken served with chorizo mayo. Moving on to the large plates there's pork belly, roasted pineapple, lychee and mint or from the sea grilled lobster, garlic and parsley butter. To close on a sweet note there's carrot and walnut cake paired with quince and mascarpone or a crème pot with drunken fruits and shortbread.

To accompany the food there's a concise wine list, cocktails, craft beers and spirits with a focus on small Irish distilleries and producers, many of which are exclusive to Daffodil Mulligan.
