Review on Folie
Folie is the debut restaurant from Guillaume Depoix, occupying a prominent corner position overlooking the gardens in historic Golden Square in the heart of Soho. A former outpost of Pizza Express, the interiors of this Parisian brasserie have undergone a lavish make-over by French agency Studio KO, evoking the glamour and spirit of the French Riviera in the 1960s and 1970s. Bathed in lots of natural light from the huge windows, mirrored gold-rimmed tables are set with smart rotund tan leather banquettes and navy chairs on a colourful terrazzo floor, and the glitzy gold cocktail bar makes a perfect setting for pre or post dinner drinks
Ex-Alain Ducasse chef Christophe Marleix, who has worked at Annabel's and The Dorchester is leading the kitchen. Open all day the menu emphasises seasonal ingredients from small-scale UK farmers alongside fish from the day boats in Cornwall and Devon. As a curtain raiser order the charcoal roasted octopus and butternut squash before moving on to a main course of chicken paillard, sage, olives and lemon or from the sea John Dory, hazelnut and chard. Desserts hit the button with a citrus panna cotta and mint or coconut, roasted pineapple, mango and passion sorbet.
Accompanying the food is a well conceived wine list that looks to Europe, together with signature cocktails along the lines of Yorgo, Ketel One vodka, grapes, pineapple juice, lime and Roots Mastiha liqueur.
